Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor. Eagerly I wished the morrow; – vainly I had sought to borrow From my books surcease of sorrow – sorrow for the lost Lenore.

Edgar Allan Poe
About This Quote

This is one of the most famous poems of Edgar Allan Poe. It tells the story of a man who becomes obsessed with a woman he loves, and the consequences that ensue. The poem begins with a man recalling a December that was very harsh. He was waiting for the arrival of his love, who would soon be married to another man.

Then, in a moment of despair, he begins to write a letter to her. In the night, he hears noises in her room and sees her ghostly face in the fire. He runs out into the storm and is shipwrecked on an island.

The next morning, he awakes from his dream and realizes it was just a dream. He has been shipwrecked on an island where he will die of starvation or be killed by wild beasts.
